Evolution of colour patterns in East African cichlid ®sh

چکیده
With between 2000 and 2500 known species, cichlids (Teleostei, Cichlidae) are probably the most species rich family of vertebrate animals. With over 1500 species, more than half of the world's cichlid species live in the African Great Lakes, where several endemic species ̄ocks evolved in parallel. Speciation rates in some of these ̄ocks are unrivaled among vertebrates and they are among the most colourful animal species assemblages on Earth. Recent studies have attempted to link the ecological and morphological diversity of cichlids with their diversity in male nuptial coloration (McElroy et al., 1991; Deutsch, 1997; Seehausen et al., 1997). Nuptial coloration, however, is but one aspect of cichlid colour

The role of physiology in the divergence of two incipient cichlid species.
Sexual selection on male coloration has been implicated in the evolution of colourful species flocks of East African cichlid fish. During adaptive radiations, animals diverge in multiple phenotypic traits, but the role of physiology has received limited attention. Here, we report how divergence in physiology may contribute to the stable coexistence of two hybridizing incipient species of cichli...
متن کاملExpression and Sequence Evolution of Aromatase cyp19a1 and Other Sexual Development Genes in East African Cichlid Fishes
Sex determination mechanisms are highly variable across teleost fishes and sexual development is often plastic. Nevertheless, downstream factors establishing the two sexes are presumably conserved. Here, we study sequence evolution and gene expression of core genes of sexual development in a prime model system in evolutionary biology, the East African cichlid fishes. Using the available five ci...

In this study, we have investigated the effects of mix of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) & Carrot) Daucus carota ( and red Bell pepper )Capsicum annuum( as a natural pigment source and astaxanthin as synthetic pigment sources on the skin colour of cichlid fish (Astronotus ocellatus sp., Agassiz, 1831), which are generally white with red patches in the dorsal skin. The fish were fed diets contain...
متن کاملCichlid Evolution: Lessons in Diversification
With an estimated 3000 species, distributed from Central and South America, across Africa to Madagascar, the Middle East, and southern India, cichlid fishes (Cichlidae) represent the most species-rich family of vertebrates. In total they account for about 10% of extant teleost diversity. Throughout their distributional range, cichlids have repeatedly demonstrated their capacity for undergoing a...
متن کاملWhat, if anything, is a Tilapia?-mitochondrial ND2 phylogeny of tilapiines and the evolution of parental care systems in the African cichlid fishes.
We estimated a novel phylogeny of tilapiine cichlid fish (an assemblage endemic to Africa and the Near East) within the African cichlid fishes on the basis of complete mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) gene sequences. The ND2 (1,047 bp) gene was sequenced in 39 tilapiine cichlids (38 species and 1 subspecies) and in an additional 14 nontilapiine cichlid species in order to evalua...
